Gaganyaan 2026: Three crew-module tests and the road to the first flight

July 12, 20263 min read

Gaganyaan questions test the mission architecture, the launch vehicle, the escape system, the test lineage and the humanoid. Each piece is covered here, anchored to the July 2026 tests.

The July 2026 tests

On 12 July 2026, ISRO accomplished three major qualification tests of the Crew Module systems.

The mission architecture

The mission will send a three-member Indian crew to a low Earth orbit of about 400 km for up to three days, ending in a splashdown recovery.

The launch vehicle. The human-rated LVM3, designated HLVM3, fitted with the Crew Escape System.

The test lineage. The Test Vehicle Abort mission (TV-D1, 2023) validated the escape system. A landing and parachute-sequence test followed in April 2026. The uncrewed G1 demonstration flight now precedes the crewed flight.

The elements UPSC names

Vyommitra. The humanoid that flies on the uncrewed precursor.

Human-rating. More than a rocket. It means reliability margins, abort capability at every ascent phase, and crew preparation. Indian Air Force test pilots trained in India and in Russia.

The roadmap. Beyond Gaganyaan, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (targeted 2035) and a crewed lunar mission by 2040.
