India's National Quantum Mission: Four verticals and a 2031 target
India's National Quantum Mission runs on two tracks, the four verticals it funds, and the 2031 deadline it promises. The exam tests both.
The mission in one line
The National Quantum Mission was approved in April 2023 with an outlay of ₹6,003.65 crore for 2023–2031, implemented by the Department of Science & Technology. It aims to place India among the leading quantum nations, alongside the United States, China and the European Union.

The four verticals
| Vertical | Goal |
|---|---|
| Quantum computing | 50–1,000 qubit machines within eight years |
| Quantum communication | Secure links; satellite-based quantum key distribution |
| Quantum sensing | Atomic clocks and magnetometers |
| Quantum materials | Superconductors and topological materials |
Four Thematic Hubs anchor a network of laboratories and startups around the mission, one hub per vertical.
The concepts
The qubit. The quantum bit. Unlike a classical bit's 0 or 1, it holds both simultaneously through superposition. Separate qubits can also correlate through entanglement.
Quantum key distribution. Uses these properties for communication security. Any eavesdropping disturbs the quantum state and is detected. Security rests on physics rather than mathematics.
Post-quantum cryptography. The mirror problem, preparing today's encryption for the day quantum machines can break RSA-class algorithms.
Why it is strategic
Quantum capability is dual-use.
For security. Interception-proof communication and precision sensing that can navigate without GPS.
For the economy. Early movers in computing and materials gain outsized advantages.
The mission's eight-year horizon is itself an exam fact. The qubit targets are framed within it.
