India and the World: July to September 2026
International relations questions in Prelims test groupings: who founded them, who joined, what the last summit decided. This quarter hands UPSC two ready-made question sets, the SCO summit India attended and the BRICS summit India is about to host.
1. The 26th SCO Summit, Bishkek (31 August – 1 September 2026)
What happened
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan from 29 August to 1 September 2026 and attended the 26th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 31 August – 1 September 2026.
The grouping facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| SCO founded | 2001 (Shanghai Five became SCO) |
| Members | China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Belarus |
| India joined | 2017 (full membership at Astana) |
| 2026 summit host | Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek) |
Static link: the SCO has two main annual summits, the Heads of State Council and the Heads of Government Council. The Bishkek meeting was a Heads of Government Council summit.
2. India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit, New Delhi (12–13 September 2026)
What is coming
India holds the 2026 BRICS chairship and will host the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 12–13 September 2026. India's stated chairship pillars are Sustainability, Resilience, Innovation, and Cooperation.
The grouping facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| BRICS founded | 2009 (first summit in Yekaterinburg) |
| Original members | Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (joined 2010) |
| Expansion | 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE joined (Saudi Arabia invited; Indonesia joined in 2025) |
| Recent summits | 16th: Kazan, Russia (2024) · 17th: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2025) · 18th: New Delhi, India (2026) |
| New Development Bank HQ | Shanghai |
Prelims trap: the 2024 expansion is the single most-tested BRICS fact. Memorise the five new members of 2024 and note that India hosted the 18th summit in 2026.
3. The India–China reset continues
The Bishkek engagement and the forthcoming BRICS summit continue the post-2024 stabilisation of India–China relations, border disengagement progress since the October 2024 patrolling agreement, resumed leadership meetings (Kazan, 2024), and dialogue channels on trade and visa restrictions. Commentary around the Bishkek summit framed it as the next step of the "dragon–elephant" reset, with US tariff policy as the shared external pressure.
Static link: the 2024 patrolling agreement covered Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh; the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is not the same as the Line of Control (LoC), LAC = India–China, LoC = India–Pakistan.
