India–China border talks: The mechanisms and the disengagement record
India and China negotiate through layered mechanisms, working-level talks, special representatives, and hotlines at the border. Each layer, and what disengagement actually means, is covered here.
The dialogue architecture
| Mechanism | Level |
|---|---|
| WMCC (since 2012) | Working-level consultation and coordination |
| Corps Commander meetings | Military level |
| Special Representatives | Political level; NSA Ajit Doval and Wang Yi |

The disengagement record
The sequence runs in four steps.
Galwan (June 2020). The clash after which disengagement became the stated goal of every meeting.
Pangong Tso (February 2021). The first phased disengagement, setting the buffer-zone template.
Gogra and Hot Springs (2021–22). The subsequent pull-backs along the LAC.
Depsang and Demchok (October 2024). Patrolling arrangements restored after four years, the most complete de-escalation since 2020.
The distinctions that carry the exam
The LAC is not demarcated. No treaty or map fixes it, which is itself the source of friction. The Line of Control with Pakistan, by contrast, follows the 1972 Simla Agreement.
Buffer zones. The no-patrol corridors created after pull-backs, policed by both sides' patrol patterns.
Panchsheel. The 1954 framework of mutual respect, non-aggression, non-interference, equality and peaceful coexistence. It remains the language India cites at every resumption of talks.
Where the process stands
The post-2024 baseline is stable de-escalation with unresolved substance. The LAC remains undemarcated. Depsang–Demchok patrolling is restored but limited. The political track through the Special Representatives continues in parallel with working-level rounds. The exam's phrasing is predictable, which mechanism meets at which level, and what changed at each disengagement point.
