MGNREGA wage rates: How they're set and why the scheme is demand-driven
Wage rates, demand-driven design, and the employment guarantee are the three things UPSC tests about MGNREGA, each covered here.

How wages are fixed
Section 6(1) of the Act empowers the Centre to notify wage rates state by state each financial year.
State-wise, not uniform. The rates reflect local wage conditions rather than a national floor.
The wage-material ratio. 60:40 in rural areas. It governs how much of a work's cost goes to labour versus materials, and it has been a recurring exam number.
The social audit. The statutory accountability mechanism that makes MGNREGA unique among schemes.
The demand-driven logic
The scheme's defining feature is that it responds to demand rather than allocating supply. A household applies for work. If work is not provided within fifteen days, an unemployment allowance is payable, a justiciable entitlement under the Act. This is precisely the option-trap, questions ask which schemes are demand-driven, and MGNREGA is the canonical answer.
The exam's through-line
Three threads recur.
Demand versus supply. The distinction, applied across schemes.
The fifteen-day trigger. The unemployment allowance's trigger point.
The scheme's asset logic. MGNREGA works concentrate on water conservation, drought proofing and land development, linking rural employment to natural resource management.
