Skill India: The mission, the schemes and the institutions
Skill India works through missions, schemes and institutions. The exam tests the architecture and the flagship programmes, both covered here.
The institutional architecture
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship | Nodal ministry (created 2014) |
| NSDC | Public–private implementation vehicle |
| PMKVY | Short-term training and certification |
| Skill India Digital | Digital public infrastructure for skilling |

The scheme map
PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana). The flagship certification scheme, running through successive versions since 2015, with Recognition of Prior Learning certifying workers who learnt informally.
PM Vishwakarma (2023). Targets artisans and traditional crafts with toolkit and credit support.
The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme. Links training to industry placements.
SANKALP and STRIVE. World Bank-assisted, focused on institutional quality.
The design features the exam loves
Recognition of Prior Learning. The most-tested feature. It certifies skills acquired outside formal training, converting experience into credentials.
The 2014 separation. Splitting skill development from the education ministry is itself a question. The rationale was industry-linked training against general education.
The demographic dividend. India's median age around 28 makes skilling the bridge between workforce size and employability.
The exam's through-line
Questions pair schemes with their clientele. PM Vishwakarma pairs with artisans. Apprenticeship pairs with industry. RPL pairs with informal workers. The delivery architecture is tested separately, NSDC as the PPP vehicle, Sector Skill Councils setting standards, and Skill India Digital as the platform layer.
