NEP at five: The 5+3+3+4 structure and what changed
NEP 2020 turns five, and the exam now tests it from two sides, the 5+3+3+4 structure on paper, and what has actually changed in schools.
The policy skeleton
| Pillar | Content |
|---|---|

The 5+3+3+4 mapping
The structure replaces 10+2.
Foundational Stage. Ages 3 to 8.
Preparatory Stage. Ages 8 to 11.
Middle Stage. Ages 11 to 14.
Secondary Stage. Ages 14 to 18.
The age mapping is the single most-asked NEP detail, and the exam sets traps by shifting the bands by one year. The structure also absorbs early childhood care into formal schooling, a departure from the RTE Act's 6–14 frame.
The implementation milestones
Five markers carry the current-affairs angle.
The curriculum frameworks. The National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage (2022) and for School Education (2023) released the curricular base.
The four-year undergraduate programme. Rolled out across central universities, with multiple entry and exit and the Academic Bank of Credits storing earned credits.
PARAKH. Established under NCERT to standardise assessment.
PM SHRI schools. Over 14,500 of them became the exemplar school scheme.
NIPUN Bharat. The foundational literacy and numeracy mission, running to its 2026–27 target.
The exam's through-line
Questions connect NEP to older law and structure.
The RTE overlap. Ages 6–14 versus NEP's 3–18 frame.
The language policy. Mother tongue or regional language as medium of instruction till at least Grade 5.
Exam reform. Competency-based assessment against rote testing.
The policy's three-language debate remains the recurring Mains angle.
